Cold spots in radiators
The classic case. Radiators that are cold at the bottom usually come back to life after a flush.
Power flushing clears the black sludge, rust and scale that build up inside a central heating system over the years. If radiators stay cold at the bottom, the house takes ages to warm up or the boiler is noisy, sludge is one of the most common causes.
Sludge is mostly iron oxide from the inside of steel radiators, mixed with scale and debris. It settles where the water moves slowest. These are the tell-tale signs:
One quick distinction: cold at the top is usually trapped air, which bleeding fixes. Cold at the bottom, or cold in the middle, points to sludge.
Fitting a new boiler? Most manufacturers expect the heating system to be cleaned before a new boiler goes on, and some make it a warranty condition. If a boiler replacement is coming, plan the flush with it.
A power flush is a fix for sludge. It is not a cure for every cold radiator, so it pays to know which problem you have.

Protects the new boiler from the dirt in the old system and keeps the warranty on side.
Kettling and banging caused by restricted flow through the heat exchanger often quieten down once the system is clean.
On very old or fragile systems a power flush can expose weak joints. The system should be looked at first, and a gentler clean may suit it better.
If some rooms are hot and others cold but the water runs clean, the system probably needs balancing, not flushing.
After a flush, the right inhibitor level and a filter slow the sludge coming back. Checking the inhibitor at the annual service keeps it that way.
Power flushing is not the only way to clean a system. A chemical clean through the boiler, or a magnetic clean at low pressure, can suit older systems better. The right choice depends on the age and condition of the pipework.
If the radiators are clean but the house is still cold, the problem is more likely the boiler, the pump or the controls. Our heating services page covers zoning, controls and radiator upgrades, and boiler repair covers a boiler that is not doing its job.

For an average house, expect most of a day. Bigger systems, or ones with a lot of sludge, take longer.
If the radiator is cold at the bottom because of sludge, usually yes. If it is cold at the top, it is more likely air. If it is clean but still cold, the system may need balancing or the valve may be at fault.
Usually, but on very old or fragile pipework the extra flow can show up weak joints. The system should be assessed first, and a gentler clean is sometimes the better option.
It is not a routine job. Most systems only need it when sludge is causing problems or before a new boiler. Keeping the inhibitor topped up slows the build-up.
Most manufacturers expect the system to be cleaned first, and some make it a warranty condition. Check with whoever is quoting for the boiler.
